Private John Kast was born in Turin, Alberta on April 26th, 1915. He grew up in Lethbridge and married Lyla Peterson in 1939. They had one son and moved around the first few years, living in or near Lethbridge, Warner, Hussar and Sunnyside. John enlisted in the army in 1943 and trained in Wainwright before serving in Europe as a truck driver until the end of WWII. After the war John and Lyla welcomed a second son.
In the spring of 1954, John and Lyla moved to a farm at Grassy Lake, where they spent the rest of their lives. John and his wife Lyla were some of the founding members of the Grassy Lake Senior Citizens Society. John and Lyla had 2 sons, grandkids and 11 great grandkids. He was a Life member of the Royal Canadian Legion. He died 11 November 2006 age 91.
