Stanley Carmichael served with the Princess Patricia‘s Canadian Light Infantry during the Korean War. A stretcher bearer and bugler, he helped clear dead and wounded from the field. He was also a qualified military parachutist. After his service with the Canadian military he moved to Lethbridge. He worked for the Post Office for 22 years and 13 years with the Provincial mail service. He finished his working career with a number of years at the provincial courthouse retiring at 77.
A member of the Korean Veterans Association of Canada, Stan returned to Busan for the dedication of the Korean War Monument. A two-term President of the Lethbridge Royal Canadian Legion he was also one of 100 Canadian Korean War Veterans invited to the unveiling of the Korean War Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.
He gave back to the community in Lethbridge in many ways. For dedication to Lethbridge Sports and officiating in baseball, softball, hockey, and football and off-ice with the Lethbridge Broncos and Hurricane hockey teams, Stan earned the Tom Foley Memorial Award as Lethbridge’s Sportsman of the Year. He was also among the first inducted into the Lethbridge Sports Hall of Fame and received the Hockey Alberta Centennial Award.
Stan was married to Joyce and they raised two children (Gerry and Colleen). Stan died in 2021 at the age of 88.
