Sapper William Scott Palmer was born in Winnipeg in 1914 to recent Scottish immigrants. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Engineers in 1941 and trained in the bridging unit at Dundurn, Saskatchewan. He served overseas for 3 ½ years with the 5th Canadian Armoured Division, including Italy, Belgium, and the Netherlands. Bill’s main assignment was hauling and erecting Bailey bridges, as well as constructing roads, which ensured that the infantry could continue to advance as the German Army retreated. Bill returned to Canada in November 1945 and married in 1949. He worked for the CNR in Winnipeg for five years before taking over his father-in-law’s farm at Davidson, Saskatchewan. Bill was an active member of the RC Legion Branch #51. He died in February 1999 at the age of 85. Bill is the grandfather of Matt Palmer who resides in Lethbridge.
